Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid surgery, also known as thyroidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. At Brundavan Nursing Home, we offer comprehensive thyroid surgery services to address various thyroid conditions, including thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), and goiter (enlarged thyroid).

  1. Evaluation and Diagnosis: We begin by conducting a thorough evaluation and diagnosis to assess the nature and extent of the thyroid condition requiring surgical intervention. This may involve a combination of medical history review, physical examination, thyroid function tests, imaging studies (such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI), and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) to accurately diagnose the underlying thyroid disorder and determine the need for surgery.

  • Surgical Planning: Our experienced surgical team collaborates closely with patients to develop individualized surgical plans based on their specific thyroid condition, medical history, and treatment goals. We discuss the proposed surgical procedure, potential risks and benefits, expected outcomes, and postoperative care requirements, ensuring that patients are well-informed and prepared for their surgery.

  • Types of Thyroid Surgery:

    • Total Thyroidectomy: Removal of the entire thyroid gland. This may be recommended for thyroid cancer, large goiters, or Graves’ disease.
    • Partial Thyroidectomy (Hemithyroidectomy): Removal of one lobe (half) of the thyroid gland. This may be performed for benign thyroid nodules or hyperthyroidism affecting only one lobe.
    • Thyroid Lobectomy: Removal of a single thyroid nodule or a portion of one lobe. This may be indicated for benign thyroid nodules or follicular neoplasms.
    • Subtotal Thyroidectomy: Removal of most of the thyroid gland, leaving a small portion of thyroid tissue intact. This procedure is rarely performed due to the risk of recurrent thyroid disease.
  • Minimally Invasive Techniques: Whenever possible, we utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as endoscopic or robotic-assisted thyroidectomy, to minimize trauma, reduce postoperative pain, shorten recovery times, and improve cosmetic outcomes. These techniques involve making small incisions in the neck or axilla (armpit) and using specialized instruments and cameras to perform the surgery with precision.

  • Anesthesia and Pain Management: We prioritize patient comfort and safety during thyroid surgery by providing appropriate anesthesia and pain management protocols tailored to each patient’s individual needs and medical condition. Our anesthesia team carefully monitors patients throughout the surgical procedure to ensure optimal pain control and minimize complications.

  • Postoperative Care: After thyroid surgery, we provide comprehensive postoperative care and support to facilitate recovery and healing. This may include monitoring vital signs, managing pain and discomfort, providing wound care instructions, prescribing thyroid hormone replacement therapy (if necessary), and scheduling follow-up appointments to assess progress and address any concerns.

  • Complications Management: Although thyroid surgery is generally safe, complications such as bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding structures (such as the parathyroid glands or recurrent laryngeal nerve), and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can occur. Our surgical team is trained to recognize and manage potential complications promptly, ensuring optimal outcomes for our patients.

  • Patient Education and Rehabilitation: We offer patient education and rehabilitation services to help patients understand their condition, recovery process, and postoperative care instructions. Our healthcare team provides guidance on dietary modifications, medication management, scar care, and lifestyle adjustments to promote optimal healing and long-term thyroid health.

At Brundavan Nursing Home, we are committed to providing compassionate, personalized, and advanced thyroid surgery services to improve the health and quality of life of our patients. Our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff work collaboratively to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based care, ensuring that patients receive the highest standards of surgical excellence and support throughout their treatment journey.
