Hernia

Hernia

Hernias are a common medical condition characterized by the protrusion of an organ or tissue through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. At Brundavan Nursing Home, we offer comprehensive hernia care, including diagnosis, surgical repair, and postoperative management, to alleviate symptoms, prevent complications, and promote recovery. Our approach to hernias involves individualized assessment, personalized treatment plans, and patient education to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

  • Clinical Evaluation: We begin by conducting a thorough clinical evaluation to assess the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and physical examination findings. Common types of hernias include inguinal hernias (occurring in the groin), umbilical hernias (around the belly button), incisional hernias (at the site of a previous surgical incision), and hiatal hernias (involving the diaphragm). Our healthcare providers carefully evaluate these hernias to determine their size, location, symptoms, and impact on the patient’s quality of life.

  • Diagnostic Imaging: In some cases, diagnostic imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may be performed to confirm the diagnosis of a hernia, assess its size and location, and identify any associated complications such as bowel obstruction or strangulation.

  • Non-Surgical Management: In select cases of small, asymptomatic hernias, we may recommend watchful waiting with close monitoring and lifestyle modifications to manage symptoms and prevent complications. However, surgical repair is often necessary to address the underlying hernia and prevent progression or recurrence.

  • Surgical Repair:

    • Open Hernia Repair: We offer open hernia repair surgery, which involves making an incision directly over the hernia site to access and repair the weakened muscle or tissue. Open hernia repair may be preferred for large or complex hernias, or when laparoscopic surgery is not feasible.
    • Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: We perform laparoscopic hernia repair, a minimally invasive surgical approach that involves making small incisions in the abdomen and using a laparoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera) and specialized instruments to repair the hernia from within the abdominal cavity. Laparoscopic hernia repair offers advantages such as reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery times, and improved cosmetic outcomes compared to open surgery.
    • Robotic-Assisted Hernia Repair: In select cases, we may utilize robotic-assisted surgery to perform hernia repair with enhanced precision, dexterity, and visualization. Robotic-assisted hernia repair may be recommended for complex or recurrent hernias, offering benefits such as improved surgical outcomes and shorter hospital stays.
  • Mesh Repair: In most cases of hernia repair, we reinforce the weakened muscle or tissue with a synthetic mesh to provide additional support and reduce the risk of recurrence. Mesh repair helps strengthen the abdominal wall, promote tissue ingrowth, and improve long-term outcomes following hernia surgery.

  • Postoperative Care: After hernia repair surgery, we provide comprehensive postoperative care and support to facilitate recovery and healing. This may include monitoring vital signs, managing pain, providing wound care instructions, encouraging early ambulation, and prescribing dietary modifications to minimize discomfort and promote digestion.

  • Complications Management: Although hernia repair surgery is generally safe, complications such as infection, bleeding, hernia recurrence, or mesh-related complications can occur. Our surgical team is trained to recognize and manage potential complications promptly, ensuring optimal outcomes for our patients.

  • Long-term Management: Following hernia repair, we offer long-term management and follow-up care to monitor for potential complications, assess surgical outcomes, and address any concerns or questions that may arise. We provide patient education on lifestyle modifications, activity restrictions, and preventive measures to reduce the risk of recurrent hernias and promote overall well-being.
